Certain Expectations.....

I know many things because I have experienced them in the past. I know that I do not like to go to the dentist because in the past it has been a real pain. Experience is my judgment. If I have never experienced something I can not declare knowledge over it. Of course, I can read plenty of analysis over certain topics, but I truly will never know until, I myself, try.

Stanley Fish’s article “How to Recognize a Poem When You Seem One,” shows how the mind makes conclusion due to past experiences. Fish conducted a project where he listed 6 last names and told his religious poetry class that those names were indeed a religious poem. The students quickly began to throw out ideas of what the words mean, how they relate, why they were written in that style, and how they were placed in writing.

Chandler talks a lot about how people expect certain things from certain genres. People know that their knowledge of an action film will be consistent while watching any action film. The security of knowing what to expect from certain things sooths people.

Fish proves Chandler’s point of genre expectations by presenting a bunch of words to his students and telling them that it is a religious poem. Due to the fact that the students were told this, they began to force ideas and reasons to support the idea of it being a poem. It’s psychological. We as humans will convince ourselves certain things to feel reassurance. Fish and Chandler support each other by what they write.

I agree with your conclusion about Fish proving Chandler’s "genre expectations". As was seen when the students deconstructed the list of names as though it was a poem.

I'm not going to lie. I choose to comment this one beacuse the color stuck out to me, but I also found it very intresting. She makes very good points, and I like how she related it to real life. I thought it was a very strong opening, it kept me intrigued.

i completely agree witht he idea of experience and learning what something is first, then having the ability to recognize it. I liked the fact that you put in a personal experience and related it to the point of the article. I apprecitae how you noticed that by the students being told it was a relgious poem, that they immediately had expepctations.
