3.10.08

For Wednesday, read the first chapter of A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf, and the two Woolf stories. Also read the (short) excerpt from Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex found in Modern Literary Theory. We will concentrate on the Second Sex and Room Wednesday.

After you've read, write a 250-400 word response which first points out a specific (that is, quote it) problem for women pointed out by either Woolf or De Beauvoir. Try to quote a comparable idea in the other essay (that is, you should ideally have quotes from both authors). How do the passages compare? What problems do these authors describe for women? What solutions do they offer? Do they strike you as plausible solutions? What might be better? What does this have to do with literature? with women in the world?
