A League of Their Own, Really?

A perfect movie to talk about when you think of feminism is, A League of Their Own. This movie takes place during WWII. This movie is about a bunch of women asked to play baseball, in replace of men since they were in the war. A feminist critic would've had a feast just at the thought of women having to replace men. It gets better when you see the womens uniforms, skirt. Another thing that a fmeinist critic would've just loved, oh and did I mention that this is a true story.

One particular scene that would've had a feminists skin crawling is when Dottie, the star player, is asked to do somthing that will open peoples eyes to the new womens league, since it wasn't doing so well. So when she see's a pop up coming her way, she dashes towards it and does a spilt while she catches the ball. The picture winds up on all the major magazine covers. A feminist would've immediatly thought of how women are being protrayed as sex objects, even during sprts, and I must admit, while I'm no no way a feminist I must agree with this. I've played sports all my life, and I wasn't intreseted in the pictures being taken, but the game. By the 1950's the the whole league fell apart.

I believe that a feminist critic would've both loved and hated this film. This league paved the way for many other women athlete, they did the unthinkable during that time period. These were strong women figures, sticking to what they believed in. But on the other hand I don't think a feminist critic would've liked the fact that they were used a sex objects. They had to play in skirts, and look good for the camera, in was more about looks than the actual sport. They were also used as replacements, and once the men came back they were tossed aside. I feel a feminist would've been very unhappy with the fact that they were blantly replacements of men. I feel all and all this was a very inspiritaional movie, and it paved the path for a lot of women who came after them.
