Marx & Engels: German Ideology

"We do not mean it to be understood from this that, for personality is conditioned and determined by quite definite class relationships, and the division appears only in their opposition to another class and, for themselves, only when they go bankrupt" (page 22).



I found this entire text complicated, as soem of you did. I understood the jist of it, but do not understand they are talking about when they talk about when they say "go bankrupt." Oh so, confused....

Okay, I found myself understanding your excerpt the most. I believe he is using bankrupt literally. He makes mention of the division only appearing when they go to another class, well a lower class would be the poor/bankrupt
