MARX & ENGELS
"The conditions under which individuals have intercourse with each other , so long as the above -mentioned contradiction is absent, are conditions appertaining to their individuality , in no way external to them ;conditions under which these definite individuals ,living under definite relationships , can alone produce their material life and what is connected with it; are thus the conditions of their self -activity and are produced by this self -activity." When I first read this portion of the essay , I read it 3 times after that and I still did not understand what Marx and Engels were trying to say .

I think what they are saying here is that people interact on the basis of their own self interest. Acting this way, it's impossible for anyone to better their living conditions. This sets the stage for Marx & Engels to later say that the proletariat has to unite in order to achieve, and of course, overthrow the capitalist state.
