(Detective Story)

1.Time and Period: Russian, post Soviet era 2001. Prison, located in southern Moscow.

2.Detective: Prison officer , male, age 44 , character : serious and determined

3.Outline the Crime : Scenario : A group of Inmates are doing time for the crimes they committed, almost everyone involved in the cell follows a certain system of rules for actions belonging to a criminal subculture which defines their language
As “blatnoy”, the underground version of the Russian language which is spoken purposely so that it will hardly be understandable to the guards on duty. The main characters are the Economist, the Prison Officer (detective), Robber, and the Bodybuilder.

Plot: The Economist is spending time in jail for dirty business he got involved to but is found to be innocent later on. He spends most of his time in the solitary confinement separate from his inmates but is usually sent back into the cell with them once a week for one day. The eight inmates already know that his time is almost up from a rumor and he is on the verge to finally escape his miserable life in jail.

4.Clues: Two inmates who are in the same cell envy the Economist, who are known as the Robber and the Bodybuilder, both are prime rivals.

During Lunch on the day the Economist visits the inmates for a day from the solitary confinement, The Robber and the Bodybuilder challenge themselves through playing a game after eating lunch along with the eight inmates watching called “five finger fillet” by using the opposite end of a spoon instead of a knife stabbing the table as many times as they can without hitting their fingers. Their result was flawless, none were injured.

5.MMO: Motive: Robber hates the Bodybuilder and envies the Economist’s leave.
Method: Crime is committed through stealth, overnight
Opportunity: everyone but no one noticed.

6.Alibis : Crime was done in the cell overnight while all the inmates were sound asleep.
7.Climax: The Prison Officer enters the cell to wake the inmates the night after the crime. The Robber disappears overnight a few moments after committing the crime when a guard asks him to step out of the cell and meet with the warden. The Bodybuilder was found facing the wall sleeping on top of his bunker bed. In the early morning, the Officer enters the cell and wakes everyone up, lastly thinking the Bodybuilder is ignoring him. He then shook the Bodybuilder after trying to wake him up and as he turned his body towards himself he suddenly discovered the opposite end of the spoon stabbed right through the Bodybuilder’s chest pronouncing him dead, as all the inmates watched in a shock. The Economist was the last person to wake up right
after the Bodybuilder was found to be dead. As soon as the Economist looks around the room while sitting up on his bed he discovers his hands and his clothing covered in Blood, screaming No!
That morning was the day the Economist was supposed to be announced to leave the premises and be a free man.

8.Denouement: The Robber uses the blood of the Bodybuilder to incriminate the Economist through false evidence, as a way to prolong the Economist’s time in jail and make it nearly impossible for him to leave. The Detective has difficulty figuring out who has done the murder because there is no support for the alibis.

9.Summary: The Prison Officer tries to figure out this crime plot. He has no choice but to find out from the cameramen that keep an eye on the cells. The Economist is in terrible misery. The Economist’s wife who is awaiting him outside the prison is told by one the guards that he is held up for murder, she faints and falls unconscious. The Prison Officer looks forward into this investigation and searches for the Robber who is later found arrested in the warden’s office and tried for murder from proof of hidden and recorded cameras in the cells. We all learn that every official in the prison finds the Robber guilty. Not only did the Robber incriminate the Economist but he indeed incriminated himself.
