1) Choose a time period and locale: Urban area of Chicago, 1990’s. Tall apartment complexes, built very close together, on narrow streets is considered home to majority of the population. Crime is high, robberies are increasing, and as a result many long time residents are moving elsewhere. Apartment building 506 is where the shooting takes place.
2) Develop a detective: The detective is Susan Lenski. Age thirty-nine, Italian decent. Lenski was raised by her mother, who was a single parent living in the lower class urban area of Chicago. Growing up, Lenski witnessed several hand-bag robberies, abuse, and other crimes. As Lenski got older she became a police officer, and eventually earned a position as a detective. Lenski was determined to help change her community, and lessen the crime on the street.
3) Outline the crime: About 12:28 pm Wednesday afternoon, Lenski receives a call from a co-worker, that there had been a shooting inside the apartment complex just blocks away from the percent. Lenski and other officers arrive at the apartment number 506, door wide open. They discover a middle age, white male shot twice in the leg, and once in the arm. Without thinking twice, the man was rushed to the hospital. Gathering as much evidence, is what Lenski and the officers did for three days. When the wounded man, was said to be recovering, Lenski went to the hospital, hoping that the victim would be able to identify his attacker. The wounded man was Harry Coleman, the newspaper editor/publishers for the “Chicago Press” the towns newspaper. Coleman identified his aggressor as forty-nine year old William Butler, his neighbor. Butler owned a meat-packing industry, which he investment a lot of time and money in. Coleman mentions that Butler had been very angry, when he received threats that the firm would be closing. Coleman released Butler’s home and mothers address, along with the location of Butler’s work site. The search was on for William Butler…
4) Include some clues: Lenski and the officers go to the address of Butlers home and ironically find a set of keys near a dumpster a few feet away from the home. Lenski picks them up and discovers that the words “Fitness Gym” was engraved on one of the keys. Another key opened the front door, of Butlers home. Detective Lenski went inside and finds a tape collection of “Little Bear”, crayons, and other childlike items. After visiting Butlers home Lenski visited the home of his mothers, Sara Sullivan. On her hands and knees, cleaning the front stairs, the officers approach Sullivan, and begin asking her questions on her sons whereabouts. Immediately, Sullivan becomes uncooperative, and tense; slamming the door. Lenski, and the officers determine that Sullivan’s meant she knew of her sons location. Day two, the officers, follow the address engraved on the other key, and arrived at a gym. Presenting their badges, and identifying themselves, Lenski, and the officers began to search the gym, and the locker which belonged to Butler. No sign of Butler. In his locker, another tape collection was found, along with a towel. Disappointed with their findings, Lenski mentions that usually all mentally ill criminals come back for their “collections.”
5) Identify the MMO: Lenski and officers arrived back at the station, and discuss the objects. Tape collections, teddy bears, crayons…Lenski concludes that Butler is very immature, and he becomes angry when things don’t go he way. Butler’s motive for shooting Coleman was over and article that he was going to publish for the newspapers in a few days. The article was about the demising meat packing company, which will eventually close for good.
6) Identify the alibis of the suspects: Lenski and the officers determine that Butler followed Coleman home from work at about 11:51 am on Wednesday. Hearing from local residents that article on the meat-packing co. would be published in a few days, Butler decides to confront the neighbor, who he knows is responsible for many of the articles in the newspaper.
7) Provide a climax: Unaware of Butlers brutal intentions, Coleman responds to the knock at his door, and lets Butler inside. Discussing the meat-packing co, and the soon to be published article, suddenly neighbors hear shots fired. The percent was notified, and Lenski received the call at about 12:28pm Wednesday afternoon.
8) Write your denouement: Days of watching the Fitness Gym where William Butler was a regular member, Lenski notices a young women about twenty-five years old, approach Butlers locker with a spare key. Rapidly the women tries to retrieve the items from the locker, but Lenski and the officers startle her, hand-cuffing her, and taking her in for questioning. The women identifies herself as Angela Royal, Butlers girlfriend. Royal claims that she was sent to the gym by Butler to get his tape collection. After hours of questioning, Royal decides to speak. Mentioning that Butler could be hiding out at a hotel, two miles away from the percent. The officers went to that location and watched it for days, but still no sign of Butler. Royal then states that Butler may be living out of his car, which is parked outside the bar. Lenski and the officers watched the bar for several days.. Yet not clue of Butler. Lenski orders the officers to release Angela Royal. This was not the end. Lenski was determined to solve this mystery. Lenski and her officers decide to watch the house of Butlers girlfriend.
9) Summarize with a short conclusion: Finally ! While looking through the window of Royals home, Lenski notices William Butler. Calling for back-up, Lenski and the officers force the front door down, and discover that Butler had been hinging out in Angela Royals attic. Both Royal and Butler were taken to jail.
