Raymond William and Sarah Cole

After reading William's essay, i find it very interesting and also very challenging. The sentence that best describe what he is talking about is: Consciousness is seen from the beginning as part of the human material social process, and its products in ideas are then as much parts of this process as material products themselves. i like the way he use culture and ideology through out the essay. As we all know that culture determines the way of living for different societies. And ideology is the opinion of an individual. we have the idea to creativity. This essay is also about how the cultural language and belief which is different from Art and literature. To relate this to real life, when a baby is born, he or she remains conscious to the new word he or she has just got ting into. Learning from other people in the society becomes a daly affair and he or she will then start to create ideas on how to live in the society and how to make use of his or her creativity to be productive to the society.

COLE: This story is a love story between a rich man and a lower class woman and they were lovers. in the beginning of the story, it describe how attractive the young lawyers are and how they handle their daiy business at work and at home. Ron happen to be one of them.

Ron is a lawyer who lived in New Hampshire. he was married for three years, him and his wife divorce because of the distance between them relating to their job location. after the divorce he met a lady called Sarah who was also divorce from her husband. they both are of different class levels. although it seems that Ron is interested in Sarah who he described to be very homely(unattractive). he does not want people to know what is going on. Ron and Sarah met several times, but not in public. When Sarah ask Ron to that they should both go out together, Ron refuse and he tries to make excuses. Sarah knew that he do not want to be seen in public with her. this was why she made these statements "you're ashamed of being seen with me. you'll sleep with me, but you won't go out in public with me."Marxist reading would describe this as rich man oppressing the poor to fulfill his desire. this is also a situation where the people in the upper class do not want to be seen together with the lower class because of their selfish pride, but they want something from them.
