4.3.08

Beginning Monday, we'll be working reading Coetzee (Coat-zee-uh)'s Disgrace. The book breaks into easy and significant parts, so we'll discuss the first portion which takes us to page 58 (chapters 1-6) for Monday. About 50 pages or so is what we'll need to discuss for each class in order to move through the book in two weeks, so plan your time accordingly and read ahead for Wednesday (where we'll be up to 99) if you need. If you do, however, be sure to confine the discussion below and in class to the earliest section of the book.

When you've read those first 58 pages, write a 250-400 word response making a connection between the novel and what you've read of post-colonial theory thus far. I'm particular interested in doing this with this portion of the book, which seems in many ways to be concerned less with the colonial legacy (or is it?) in Africa. Be sure to quote one of the readings--Achebe, Said, hooks--at least once in your response, making a specific connection between it and a line or scene from the novel.

I'm looking forward to your rewrites.
